George Condo at Xavier Hufkens

George Condo, solo exhibition at Xavier Hufkens

In his second solo exhibition at Xavier Hufkens, George Condo stages a dialogue with the figure. Portraits and drawings are distorted in the style of cubism. Others are delivered in a dramatic style, evoking the costumes and brush strokes of 17th century old masters. Blue Rodrigo and Middle Aged Vampire have all the intensity of a Francis Bacon painting. However, the work of Condo is more like a collage of styles or a sum of pictorial ideas. A contemporary emotionality is incorporated in the groups of seemingly traditional portraits, sketches and sculptures. The rows of teeth play a prominent role, as if they are belong to voracious creatures. In the smiles and expressions of his characters, the artist portrays the hysteria and idiocy of these times.

In the clown series, superficiality, self-representation and subcutaneous fear despair are evoked in a masterly fashion.
Here, Condo treats human psychology as a diverse complex topic, fixing upon the emotional ambivalence of human expression.

In his work, George Condo strives towards a new conceptualization of classical painting. A reflection on staging, representation and
simulation is embedded in one pictorial story narrative. His portraits, studies and groups can be read as an allegory of Zeitgeist. They demonstrate a transition from a cartoonish to a subcutaneous reality.

George Condo (1957) was born in Concord, New Hampshire. He has exhibited extensively in the US and Europe. His work has featured in exhibitions in the Whitney Museum and MOMA in New York, the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Monterrey, Mexico, the MAMAC in Nice, France, the Staatliche Kunthstalle Baden-Baden, Germany, the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht, the Netherlands, and the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, Ireland. His work is in the permanent
collections of MOMA, the Whitney Museum, the Guggenheim Museum and the Albright-Knox Museum in New York.

A catalogue of the exhibition including a text by Thomas Kellein will be available from the opening, Thursday 28 May 2009.

an Italian National Event in the European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2009
under the patronage of Jan Figel, Member of the European Commission, responsible for Education, Training, Culture and Youth

The Fourth CEI Venice Forum for Contemporary Art Curators from Central Eastern Europe - Continental Breakfast. The Pass 2009 is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, the 3rd of June, from 9.30am to 1pm and from 2.30pm to 6pm, at the UNESCO Office in Venice-Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe (BRESCE).

[About the Forum] The meeting will be the fifth edition of a biennial event which will be opened to Central Eastern European (CEE) experts and curators and to the commissioners of the Venice Biennale responsible for the national pavilions of the CEE countries. It will be organised under the patronage of Central European Initiative (CEI) which, after the experimental edition of 2001, adopted the Venice Forum as one of its Feature Cultural Events.

The Venice Forum is promoted by the Trieste Contemporanea Committee in collaboration with the UNESCO Office in Venice - UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe (BRESCE) and is an activity of the international project Continental Breakfast, that fosters and supports the creation of partnership projects and multidimensional capacity building exchange programmes in the field of contemporary art in Central Eastern Europe and is composed at present by a network of institutions in Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Italy, Macedonia, Poland, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey and United Kingdom. The 2009 edition is an Italian National Event in the European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2009.

Apart from the presentation of contributions by the representatives of most CEI countries, the programme will include case studies and comprehensive debates with the public.

The 2009 Venice Forum will include a Special Section for the first time dedicated to curators and critics from Central Asia, thanks to the kind suggestion of Ms. Beral Madra, commissioner of the Biennale's Pavilion of Central Asia.

[Topics] In the European Year of Creativity and Innovation, the 2009 CEI Venice Forum wishes to offer a challenging critical standpoint to the issue, focusing on current debates in the art field.
In order to inquire how art curators would be able to forward new issues concerning the role assigned to art in the production of (visual) meaning with regard to the new use of images created for mediation and transmission, the Forum's key questions will include: What are the criteria of evaluation and acknowledgement currently used by curators for defining and distinguishing the cultural innovation (and the responsibility) of contemporary visual arts? Which are today the appropriate and delegated places for receiving and promoting artistic creative innovation?

e-flux presents Jan Verwoert at the building

The building is pleased to present the tenth talk in a monthly series of conversations and lectures by the art critic Jan Verwoert entitled Why are conceptual artists painting again?
Because they think it's a good idea.

Positive Bleeding
Shared Profanity and the Touch of the Animal/Soul

This evening will continue along the lines drawn up in the previous talk: towards the notion of a critical sensualism and defiant materialism. The question that arose in the the last discussion was prompted by the final scene of Carl Th. Dreyer's Joan of Arc (1928). After a stunning materialist rendering of profane faces in motion, Dreyer ends the film by changing the key dramatically: as Joan burns at the stake, a flurry of symbols erupts, "You burned a saint" someone shouts, a riot starts, all prompted by the sacrifice of Joan's face to a symbolic order, the law of morality. Why this sacrifice to the symbolic? Could we not imagine the emergence of a defiant community without such sacrifice? On the materialist basis of shared profanity? Not in the sign of the sacredface, but in the spirit of the profane joy and pain of shitfaces: as an insurrection of creatures being shitfaced together, like in the (proto)Situationist paintings of Asger Jorn, Constant or Karel Appel?

To philosophically develop this intuition of a politics of profanation, the evening will begin with some thoughts on how Kurt Vonnegut, in Breakfast of Champions (1973), embraces profanity as the spirit of a different possible America, in defiance of an America that sacrifices itself to stories of romance and ambition—to continue with Giorgio Agamben's notion of profanation as a means (not of debasement or secularization but) of bringing the sacred back into the sphere of communal use and enjoyment through rituals without myths.

With these ideas in mind, we will return to an unanswered question that arose earlier in the series of discussions: If, symbolically, our exchange through art is governed by rites of keeping and sharing secrets, which rites do we want to embrace, which reject? Could we now not distinguish between a strategical art that strives to succeed economically through the savvy symbolic rarification of its secret as oh so special—and a defiant materialist art that dares to share the profanity of its secret in the moment of celebrating its obscene opacity? Bless the Cramps! Yes: "Everybody has heard about the bird." Nothing rare about the bird. Still, the joys of the bird are secret and boundless!

As the bird knows and shows: On the threshold to the symbolic (its narratives and economies) defying the sacrifice of our joy and pain, we might gather as creatures in motion and witness each other's lives through touching our anima(l)/soul. Riffing on this notion of an animal philosophy delineated by Derrida in L'animal que donc je suis (2006) we will then follow the motion of animals into the history of painting—pursue some cats in Balthus, dogs in Velázquez, lizards in Lorenzo Lotto and lions in other places—to try and grasp how their anima-tionality, the motion of their soul, their wiggle, animates painting materially, i.e. profoundly profanely.

In pursuit of the animal/soul, we might arrive at an understanding of what Artaud may have ment, when, rejecting Breton's Marxism as ideological, he proposed a counter-materialism of the soul and a different ethos of the secret as the spirit of surrealism's insurrection in Surrealisme & Révolution (1936): "Dans cette révolte nous engagions notre âme, et nous l'engagions matériellement. (..) How to engage the soul, materially? Some final sketchy thoughts regarding Lorenzo Lotto's San Jerónimo penitente (1546), Urge Overkill and positive bleeding as a means to profane the soul and get down with the creatures.

Jan Verwoert is an art critic based in Berlin. He is a contributing editor to Frieze magazine and also writes regularly about contemporary art for such art magazines as Afterall, Metropolis M. Teaches at the MA Fine Arts department at the Piet Zwart Institute Rotterdam.

The building is an e-flux project.
The building is open Thursday through Saturday, 12 – 6 pm. Admission is free.

:: Flux video rental (EVR)...

e-flux video rental (EVR) is an ongoing work by Anton Vidokle and Julieta Aranda, comprising a free video rental, a public screening room, and a film and video archive that is constantly growing. This collection of over 850 works of film and video art has been assembled in collaboration with more than 400 artists, curators and critics. In the 1960s and 70s, artists were drawn to working with video in part because it was cheap to use and easily reproduced and distributed. But video art has become increasingly assimilated to the precious-object economy of the art market. EVR is a poetic exploration of alternative processes of circulation and distribution, and it is structured to function like a typical video rental store, except that it operates for free. VHS tapes can be watched in the space, or, once a new member fills out a membership form and contract, they can be checked out and viewed at home. Originally presented at a storefront in New York, in 2004, EVR has traveled to art venues in Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Seoul, Paris, Istanbul, Canary Islands, Austin, Budapest, Boston, Antwerp, Berlin, Miami, Lyon, Lisbon and Cali. Every time EVR opens in a new city, local artists, curators and writers are invited to serve as selectors, choosing artists whose work is added to the collection, and organize programs of screenings and discussions.Friday, December 5th, 6 PM, in Cali - a screening program put together by Wilson Diaz, including works by Allora & Calzadilla, Santiago Sierra, Alicia Framis, Joe Villablanca, Andrea Schneemeier, John Bock and Gilbert & George.41 Salòn Nacional de Artistas de ColombiaInstituto Departamental de Bellas Artes Cali-ColombiaAv 2 Norte No.7N-28

Instead of attempting to present work in the confines of an art fair booth, we have joined forces to create a dynamic exhibition space where we can feature one-person exhibitions and curated groupings of work by gallery artists. "Art fairs will continue to flourish until the bottom falls out of the art market, or until dealers, who invented them, decide that there is a better way to do things. Two dealers already on this quest are Ronald Feldman, a longtime SoHo gallerist, and Joe Amrhein of Pierogi, a Williamsburg fixture. They have rented a one-story building in the Wynwood district here and filled its 12,000 square feet with works by artists they represent." Nombre:
